ok, here goes. I have a 1960 f100. It had a 72 351w,and now I put an 88 5.0 fuel inject. in it. I need to know if I can use my existing solenoid and just add the wires for ignition to it from the 5.0 wiring? I have the complete wiring harness and the computer from the 5.0. On the 351w solenoid there is 2smaller connections, "s" and "i". and on the 5.0 sol.there is only 1 connection. How do I wire this? Also, there is not another diode looking thing connected to it like on my friends 88 5.0. Is this diode looking thing for the fan relay? Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks, miami.
If I am correct the S stands for start and that wire just gets hot when the ignition switch is turned to the start position. The I is for ignition and it gets hot when the key is at the run position. The solenoid with just one post just has a start post and does not need the wire to stay hot at the run position. Other than that I think they are interchangable. I'm not sure what the diode looking thing is because I have never seen one on any of my mustangs. I could be a noise filter for the radio or somthing like that. Hope this helps.
Don't use your old solenoid!! I just bought a new solenoid for my 55 F-100 today and the instructions said not for vehicles with computers. I don't have it in front of me right now but there is a different solenoid that is used on computer controlled engines. I can get more info on this tomorrow if you need it.
The old "I" terminal was used to bump the coil voltage to 12V for a hotter spark during cranking/starting. It ran straight to the coil and bypassed the ballast resistor, or resistor wire, which steps the voltage down to the 6V-8V range when engine is running. "I" terminal has no power as soon as the S terminal is no longer powered by start circuit.
I suspect you are referring to a fusible link as a diode? Do you have a wiring schematic for the donor vehicle? I'd check the library or do some web searches. It would be really helpful to you. Speculating where a wire goes/does is just no good. But you know that already.
