Outer hub assembly

My '89 manual hub assemblies come off when you take off the front wheels. They've always worked good just sitting on there held on by the wheels, but I can't believe the're supposed to do that. I looked in the Haynes book and they mention "retaining washers" which I don't have on either of them, they just slide off. What are they, where do I get some if I need them? Just curious and thought if anyone knew it would be you all. Thanks.

I think they came with little retaining washers from the factory, but they aren't needed and probably got lost the first time someone toojk the wheels off.
