Signal/Stop light problem

Hey all, got this problem with my turn signals/stop lights. About a week ago I noticed that the right turn singal started to flash faster than usual(on my control panel). I also noticed that the bulb was not flashing. Then, mysteriously it went back to normal and the bulb was flashing. Then it happened again, this time the left turn signal was acting the same way.
Now when I use my turn signals they do not work. They also click very fast, faster than normal. Also, my brake lights dont work as well. I replaced the back turn/stop bulbs but same thing kept happening. I checked the passenger fuse panel and that fuse was ok. I am thinking maybe it could be the flasher?
Any suggestions? I am hoping it isnt some kind of electrical short. I havent checked the front relays yet. I looked in the manual and couldnt find which one controls the brake/turn signals. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like a possible multifunction switch problem.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is a multifunction switch and how do I fix it? Where is it located? Can i do it myself or should I take it in? Thanks for the speedy replies!!

The multi function switch is in the steering column. It is a pretty easy fix if you have some patience. It is the lever that controlls your turn signals, windshield wipers and high beams. It is sold as a complete assembly. If you have a Haynes manual it explains how to remove it and it's not really that difficult.

Just to clarify the problem a bit more:
1. The headlights work as well as the high beams
2. My night lights work both front and rear
3. My emergency lights dont flash
4. Brake lights dont work
5. Turn signals dont work
I am not that mechanically inclined so I want to rule out all possibilities before I take it to the shop. Could it be the relay that is located in the relay box in the engine compartment? Could it be the flasher. Well now that I think about it, the flasher shouldnt be the problem since my brake lights dont work. As far as fuses go, I pulled the fuse out which the manual said it was in compartment 13 and uses a 20m amp fuse. I checked it out and it didnt seem burnt. I am going to take it out again and replace it just to make sure.
One more thing. Does the flashing on the dash board have anything to do with the problem? Again, it flashes way too fast. Faster than it did when it was working properly.
Thanks again for the replies!!

Little WD-40 will fix it...

Hey everyone... I had exactly the same problem recently. The switch is easy to remove after removing the bottom steering column cover (unscrew the tilt lever). There are 2 connectors that will have to be disconnected too. Use a long screwdriver and be patient. After the switch and stalk are out, spray some WD-40 or any contact cleaner inside. I like to use something with a light lube in it. Operate the switch for several minutes and it will be fine. Your turn signals, hazard switch and bright lamps will work perfectly when you're done.

Also, don't hesitate to get some WD-40 in the door latches if your door ajar light stays on.

Have fun!
