'85 f-150 4x4

Hey guys/gals, this site is awsome! OK I just bought a 85 150 xl 4x4, has a rebuilt 351, less than 2k on miles. Here is my probs. It has a 3" body lift, and they added the "add a leaf" kit on the rear. SO the back of the truck sit's higher than the front. I am suer the stock springs on the front are sagging, I am wondering if the spring's that are out on the market claiming to add 2" over stock lift in the front are worth getting to make the truck more level. Also having fuel gauge prob. I have been reading everyone that has the same prob.s with guages and it seem's to be the floats. My second question is has anyone bought one of those guage pods to install and how bad was it to do. <Guage pod that has the fuel, oil, temp, volt, speed/tach.

well i think if you put a lift on it even 2" the alignment would be out of wack. You would have to get the axle pivot drop brackets.

I have the same fuel guage problem. but when i fill mine it goes way past full any one know why? after 1/2 tank it just drops off completley.

For the lift, you can get a 2" leveling spring, then you also need to get the adjustable camber bushing (they go in the top balljoint) that allows for more lift with keeping the tfront in alignment, make the truck look very sharp.

Thanks for the reply, my fuel gauge does the same thing. If I fill up, the needle goes way past full, like 1/4, work's fine till it get's around a half tank, then some time's it will show where it's at sometimes it stay's at empty. I keep a 5 gallon, gas can with me just in case..lol. I am looking at getting racing gauges, like suntech or something in that style, getting some sheet metal and building a cluster myself. I seen an older chevy setup like that and it looked sharp. It seem's from reading other post that the '80s guages are crappy, everyone has the same type problem's. Maybe an aftermarket guage will solve our woes.

Generally, it seems that the sending unit in the tank is more at fault than the fuel guage. Unfortunately, sending units are expensive and a real pain to change out because you have to drop the fuel tank. One thing that is easy to check and doesn't cost anything is to trace the sending unit wire from the tank to the firewall to make sure the insulation isn't rubbed through anywhere. It's a long shot, but if the wire is damaged, a new sender or a new guage won't fix the problem anyway. Overall though I concur that the 80s series gas guage setups suck.

Good Luck,

Ernie

Check the ground on your sending unit. The sending unit shows empty at about 22 ohms and full at 130ohms, or somewhere in that range, don't remember exact numbers but those are close.

So if your ground is bad, the ohms will go up and your gauge will show way over full. You know how great Ford ground systems are........yea right!

Mine should be a little easy I hope, I have a 3" body lift, I can actually sit up and look at the top of my tank, I have about 3-4 inch's abouve the tank to work with. I just got so used to watching the milage I wouldn't know how to act if the guage read right lol

WOW that is the best reason for a body lift that I have heard yet! I just redid my rear tank and it was a pain in the.......

That 3" or 4" would be fantastic!

All effin' right!! I was looking for a really good excuse for lifting my truck, and convincing the ol' lady that I need to do it to fix the fuel sending unit will be easy!
