Jharger - Thanks for the explaination. It looks like everything is pointing to the O-rings. Does anyone know how much the dealer would charge to change them? I hate the check engine light!! the only thing it means is you have to spend money to get it turned off!! I think the last Ford Dealer didn't know how to troubleshoot the issue. I would have thought they would have jumped all over that job.
Yeah - like my torque curve? Anyway, this has got to be a $250-$350 job I would think at a dealer. Joe's garage for maybe $200. Home job for $35 in gaskets/seals and a 6 pack. You are going down a dangerous path and it will only get worse with time...but, we have turned the corner on the winter solstic so it's getting warmer. Like I said before, to reset the computer codes, disconnect the battery - the ram clears. If you still get a CEL, the problem is still there - that's where you are.
Okay, i finally got around to replacing the intake manifold gaskets and it fixed the problem! I have a little mystery. My gas gague over the last month or so wasn't working properly. I would never reach empty. I ran out of gas twice before realizing it. Now that I fixed the intake manifold gaskets, my gas gague seems to be working again. I was wondering if the gague works on vaccum and the vaccum leak was causing the problem.
I have the same codes on my '97 Ranger, P0171 and 174. I have gone round and round with those codes. I have had the codes reset, did the pos battery terminal removal, changed both O2 sensors, MAF, AIC, fuel filter and still the same codes. It also stalls frequently and the RPM's sometimes will fluctuate from damn near stall to normal, back to damn near stall and sometimes stall out. I am having it smoke tested tomorrow (30 Jan 07). Will let you know how it turns out.
I had the same problem about 3-4 years ago. I was told on here to take it in because Ford had exstended a warranty to cover this proble. I believe they replace the intake manifold gasket but I'm not sure. If there is a way to find my old posts on here I could tell you for sure since I have gotten rid of my invoices. If anyone knows a way to search for old topics, let me know.
How did it turn out? Well, they changed the gasket on the intake and the next day, the check engine light came back on. Also, my drive shaft center bearing blew apart so I took it back and they fixed the center bearing, and redid the gasket. I haven't been able to get back there, in over a week. But they at least know it isn't the gasket, so they can look for other causes. And they need to fix the center bearing, maybe flip it around as I have constant vibrations, like going over small bumps, and especially when I start off accelerating. It is what it is, but I think I can see the end, at least I am on the right path.
Chasecd if it was smoked to find the vaccuum leak that causes the 171 174 codes and the gasket isnt the problem what made them change the gasket? The point of having something smoked is to eliminate guesses. Did they check the MAF?
I checked my old posts from 4 years ago and found that my problem was the o-rings around the lower intake gasket. Ford fixed it under the Ford recall # 00M12. There may have been a mileage limit but I'm not sure. I had it fixed in November of 02 and have not had any problems since.

They changed the upper intake gasket to completely rule that out. Because the light came on again, he then really knew it wasn't the uig. It could very well be the lower, and he did mention that. Hey, it didn't cost me for him to redo the uig, so no worries there. I will take it back this week. He will probably look more closely at the lower gasket. Actually, when he smoked it the second time, there was some very slight wisps of smoke from that area (lig) so that could be it. I am going to try to get it there today. Will let you know.
I learned of the recall in a forum on here and just mentioned it to them when I took mine in. They said they would check that and was good on their word because that ended up being the problem. Ford recall #00m12. I have checked and found that the original recall was for the intake gaskets and the timing chain tensioner. The recall is good for only 6 years / 72,000 miles.
tomot805,
Thanks. I too checked on here (realized that after I asked) and found the same info. My truck has 100k more so that doesn't count. But, yeah, knowing about the LOWER intake gasket is a good call and they are going to check that Fri.
Thanks
Hopefully you'll get the problem resolved. And if they saw smoke in that area it is a good chance that is the problem. Smoke machines are great. We use ours at work all the time. Great for oil leaks and exhaust leaks too.
