Yesterday i bought a "c-reader" OBD 11 from Harbor frieght to scan the codes on my 96 f-150. This morning i pluged it into the "data access port" under the ashtray while the truck was running like the instructions said but nothing happened at all. I did the same process on my 2000 chevy impala and everything worked just like it was suppose to. Any idea what went wrong? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
GM and Ford use different electrical protocols and different pins on the OBD-II connector. GM uses VPW and Ford uses PWM. Ford uses pin 10 on the connector and GM does not. Your scanner may not be compatible with SAE J1850 PWM, or there may be a problem connecting to pin 10.
The C-reader manual on Harbor Freight's website claims that the scanner does support PWM, even though it is not working for you. The broken English in the manual is typical of many Chinese-made products. Perhaps the quality of the product is in line with the manual, and it has a defect in Pin 10 on the connector. Harbor Freight is usually good about taking such products back.
