I have a 76 f150 with a 360. Can't get it to start. it turns over and sometimes it sounds like it wants to start but won't. I 've put in new plugs, wires, cap and rotor. It's getting fuel. I put on a new carb two weeks ago and it seemed ok. Sometimes if I crank on it long enough it will sputter a little but it won't stay running. I had it running last weekend when I replaced all the plugs, wires and dist cap, and it sat all week. I started it this morning and it started right off then ran rougher and rougher until it just sputtered and died. Now it won't start at all.
116000 miles. I just got it about 2 months ago. I was wondering about timing too. when it did run it would sometimes make a pop sound out the exhaust. I had the ignition module tested and it was ok. So I guess I'm running out of things other than the timing. Is it hard to repplace the timing chain?
All these suggestions are excellent ones! start with the cheapest solution (ie:fuel pump) and work up. Always nice when you fix the problem with little or no money.
The timing chain isn't hard to change, just buy a good repair manual ( i prefer HAYNES) . You have to take off the water pump, so make sure you buy a timing chain set that has ALL the gaskets for this job. Most important is you dont get anti-freeze in the oil!
P.S. spend a few extra bucks and get a true roller chain instead of OEM chain. it will slide right on in! GOOD LUCK
I just replacd the head gaskets on my 390. Its only got like 5000 miles on the motor.
Ive torqued everything, heads were to 95 ft lbs, intake to 35. NEw Carb. Was running okay before i took it apart.
Now that its back together, its hard to start, like the timing is off. Idles very high even with the idle adjusted as little as possible. Timing was set to 10 deg. btdc off #1, Firing order was checked, and rechecked. I sprayed the base of the carb with starting fluid, didnt find any vac. leaks. Any Idea's? Thanks In Advance!
Ok, I can't get my 76 f150 with a 360 started. I have had the ignition module and alt tested both were good, I've put on new plugs, wires, cap rotor, and coil. new battery cables. The best I can get it to do is sputter, but it still won't start. I'm thinking it's a spark issue. The carb is giving it plenty of fuel, could it be giving it too much? I'm out of ideas.
update. I tried unpluging the coil wire and then cranked it over, it didn't sound any different then when it was connected. does that tell me anything?
could it be the carb? I have a new holley 2300. I got it started this morning it ran really rough for a few min the warmer it got the smother it ran, then it got really rough after about 10-15 min, and then it died. there was a lot of steam coming out of the carb. could it be flooding or running too rich?
