I have an 86 F-150 with a side mounted gas tank inside the frame rails, and i was wanting to switch to a rear mounted gas tank behind the axles.....so i was wondering what kind of work am i looking at???? and if there would be any kind of modifications....any help would be great, Thanks
All the extra capacity tanks say for trucks that came with dual tanks originally. I was thinking about putting one in behind the rear axle also. I bet it could be done, but with a lot of aggravation. I am going to put a new side tank in on my vehicle.
i actually am wanting to totally dumb the side tank and only have the rear, i have no use for a dual tank system....the reason i want only the rear tank is because i want to run my exhaust from the headers back into flowmaster mufflers and then dump them infront of the axle.....and the side mounted gas tank interferes with my future exhaust setup
so i was wondering, since i dont have the gas door behind the wheel well can i just reroute the one i already have to fill the new tank??
My 1983 has discrete dual exhausts with cats and glas-paks. Both pipes run down the original exhaust side and dont interfere with the front tank in any way. A good muffler shop (like the one I deal with) can handle this problem. My truck drinks gas, so 2 tanks are a good thing.
I have large dual flowmaster exhaust with dual tanks and I have had no problems at all. Just like Holmesuser01 stated, A good muffler shop should be able to handle this task with no problem.
the thing is im really picky about my exhaust, and there is a certain way i like it...and the tank interferes with the way i want the pipes to run, the muffler shop told me that it would interfere also......so would i just have to reroute the the original filler door to the new tank????
If you want to do it right, then I would move the filler door, get a new tank (and pump since you are in there), plus you will need new tank straps or a set from the junk yard. I wouldn't use the filler in the old position, it would work but....you will end up with a very slow filler neck. After that it is just a matter of extending the pressure and return lines and the wiring.
P.S. If you really want, the pump assembly for the side tank and the rear tank are the same so it could be reused.
