Pump?

If my water pump on a 95 F150 inline six was leaking would there be a residue all along the block about 1/2 and inch under the spark plugs? I can smell coolant when I park it and open the hood after driving, however it doesn't burn any AF and there is nothing but oil in my oil when I change it.

might want to look at the radiator fins. you might have a very small leak there and it is blowing onto the engine and is burning off on the spark plugs

Rad is new, fins are dry and clean/straight. Front of water pump is dry, but along the block has the residue.

How about the weep hole under the water pump "snout"?

That is the thing, I can't get a good look at it. I can only look from the top of the engine, if I want to get under the truck and look I would need a wetsuit and some swim fins. Its parked in a flat lot with a lot of melted snow under it. Would coolant coming out of the weephole get blown back along the drivers side of the block during normal driving? That is what I had thought and was just trying to make sure I was right.

If you can get your fingers under the snout, wipe it with a paper towel. And, yeah, the fan can blow a leak lots of neat places.

Sounds like MN winters aren't good for truck repair!!!

I am actually at school in Fargo, ND. But eitherway winters are not the best time to be under the truck. If I was home in MN I have a nice heated 2 car garage. Just wipe under the snout and take it for a drive then? If it is does that mean pump is shot or going to be soon?

Actually, just wiping should tell you if coolant is/has been leaking from the weep hole. If so, you're gonna need a pump change 'cause the seals are going bad.

if you could get ahold of a radiator pressure pump (small handpump with radiator cap attached) you could find the leak. Probably is at the water pump hole.

No access to my tools here at school, otherwise I would be using the pressure tester. How long can I go before I need to get a new water pump? Would I be able to "limp" it home for spring break to change it? It doesn't get driven that often up here, maybe once a week to run to town otherwise it would only be driven home. If I keep an eye on the temp guage and the coolant level and make sure it is up before I go home I should be ok right?

Wicky -

Something to consider: If the pump's seals/bearings go out while you're on the way home for spring break, you're gonna be stuck until you change that pump.

BTW, have you confirmed the weep hole is your problem?

It was raining today and therefore I thought it best to not open the hood and get the engine soaking wet while I am trying to see if there is fluid under the pump snout
