I have read a lot of good information on glow plugs but one thing I can't find is how to remove the electric connector from them. I think they should just pull off but I can't get them loose by pulling. Is there a trick to this or am I just not pulling hard enough. I don't want to screw up the connector or wiring. They are probably the original glow plugs and still work well. I don't use this truck much in the winter but would like to change them to prevent problems later on. 1993 F350 non-turbo crew cab dually. 70,000 miles
Yes,they just pull off.You can try to twist them before pulling them off.The connectors are known to turn brittle so a few of them may crumble during removal.
Thanks, I thought they just pulled off, wanted to be sure. I just finished changing them. Hardest part was getting the electric conectors loose. I did find one bad one that the top of the plug was burnt off but was able to get it out okay so i guess they weren't working as well as I thought. The wait to start light stays on a lot longer now. You guys with turbos must have a hard time getting to some of them. I was a little scared to change them because of all the stories about broken tips, but all went well. I used new Motorcraft glow plugs and put antiseize on the threads. Should be good for a long while I hope.
My glow plug wire connectors are DOA also. I was thinking about using some Shrink Tubing on them instead of having to replace the pricey GP wire harness. Is that OK. Does the engine get so hot as to melt off the shrink tubing? How absolute are the connectors anyways---or is that a dumb question? Thanks

Go to Pep Boys or AZ and get some electrical connectors that crimp on. Take an old gp with you and find the right size. They should work just fine. Good luck with it.
Shrink tube works fine, do it in two layers, leave 1/8" over the end and trim it to leave 1/16" so the metal part of the connectors will not accidently contact steel/block etc when disconnected.
Thanks everyone, I don't mind cramp on connectors, but I think I'll try the Shrink Tube first------ Because I like it and I have enough of the right size already!!!!

Don't be afraid to pull GP's,the tips are tougher than you think, take one of your old ones and try to break off the tip, you'll see it's not that easy. The problem usually comes when the tips are swollen or cracked because they stayed on too long, then it is really hell to get them out, especially retrieving the broken off tips!
