98 EB Expy Compass problem

I just had a new alternator and battery installed on my 98 expedition, but now my compass only reads SE, no matter what direction I am going! I tried resetting the zone but the compass did not detect the reset button being pushed, nor did it detect it when I tried to recalibrate it. Any one w/similar issues?

Same problem with my 98 Expy (reads SE). I thought it was as a result of installing a magnetic strip for my neighborhood gate, but perhaps it's something else. For the past 2 years I've been driving southeast; I live in Florida now :-)

my 99 eb went out when I went to boston last fall. It was fine all the way there on the way home it kept reading the wrong direction. I don't remember what it said. I thought I would reset it when I got home. A few days later i went out to read the manual and reset it but it was fine. I have since been back to boston to columbus and to orlando with no problems.

My 99 EB compass flips a 180 about every 30 days, it's a royal pain. I haven't corrected it in about 6 months, I just ignore it now. That's sad.

Talking Just try it...

This problem seems to occur when the battery cables are disconnected, did on mine anyway.

Look for the directional sensor attached to your rear view..small black box.

Look close at the bottom of this box and you will see the reset.

You will need a large paper clip ..extend one end outward using the folded end as a handle.

Now you are ready for the cure.. take your Expy to a vacant lot someplace that you can turn in without stopping.

Choose a direction you want to go in clock or counter (depends L /or R handed)

You must turn in the same direction at all times. Insert the paperclip in the reset. Hold for a round ..DO NOT STOP release the clip. you should see a various assortment of numbers ...continue to turn in a circle at a a continuial pace and watch your direction on the display .

As you turn the direction should read N S E W SE SW and etc. If not continue the process above.

Remember follow my instructions it will work for you! The dealership wanted a bunch for a new compass...odds are YOU DON"T NEED IT!

I used to do this about once a month, but got tired of messing with it.

Red face Well...

Tell you what you may try as well... a friend of mine removed the black box cover ( comes apart in half ) amd sprayed the circuit board with "flamable" contact cleaner.

This seemed to help his problem... sounds like you may have a shortage, as your problem comes around every 30 da or so.

I would give it a good shot of cleaner then try the proceedure over. If you are like me ...I hate having something that does not work!

Another thing be sure to use the flamable cleaner, it is more expensive and does a better job than the other. Also it leaves no residue on contacts.

I hope this helps you ...
