I have a TOD Transmission in a 84 f-150. I want to take the 4.9l and put in a 460. Will my tranny hold up? I really like my o/d tranny and don't want to get rid of it. Will the TOD handle the torque and hp of a slightly warmed over 460?
well i'm not sure what a TOD is but if youre talkin about what i think you are its an AOD. They can handle the torque..once built up....in stock form the 460 would make short order of it....and you'll have to find a means of attaching a Smallblock bellhousing to a 385 series big block pattern....so if cost is a concern this isnt the swap for you...unless you're really talented.
later on....cant remember what year it was exactly..maybe 89 or 90...or early 90's somewhere they came out with an E4OD which did come behind 460's if i'm not mistaken...they are electronic so you'd have to get everything you need..itd be a good swap if you had a donor truck...but thats a whole new ballgame.....
I like the AOD's personally but i would settle for a C6 in this case...not that a c6 is bad....they're great....but no OD.
just my thoughts.

A manual box should handle it, but you also need to take a hard look at your radiator to make sure you have enough cooling for it.
That big-block is also probably going to need a different set of motor mount perches. Check around and see what the mounts look like in big-block equipped trucks.
(scrapyards are a good place to eyeball things like that)
It should hold up fine, I have been putting 380 hp and 500ftlb of torque through mine for years and I have been know to use the go pedal hard at times.
