98 - Ford Alarm Question

98 - Ford Alarm Question
I have a 98 Expy EB 5.4L 4X4 and wanting to install either a Remote Start alone or with a FULL alarm. I was looking at both the SILVER and GOLD Ford units.
I then called my local Ford Stealer who informed me that Ford DID NOT offer ANY RS/Alarm systems that would work with a 98 Expy - only 2002 and above!!!
From what I have gathered on this site, that appears to NOT be the case.... I really wanted to stay with Ford unit, but since I was told "No such beast", I decided to go with the Viper 560XV (scheduled for next Tues)... That is unless I can use a Ford unit.
Your opinion/help would be greatly appreciated.
