First, I just want to say thanks to this forum for the great information and help you provide. I recently was able to find some threads that spelled out what gear lube my 97 Expedition uses. It has the limited slip rear differential, so it uses synthetic lube.
When I went to the local autoparts store to get new lube, they didn't have straight synthetic. All they carry is a "synthetic blend" which I assume is a blend of synthetic and dino oil. Is this OK to use? or do I need to get 100% synthetic?
What weight are you supposed to run? 75W90, 80W90, 85W140, 75W140
I know you can go to your Ford dealer and get the right stuff but watch out, I looked at their 75W140 from the Ford dealer here and it was like $17 dollars a quart! Napa carries Valvoline products and Valvoline makes a full syn. 75W90 but they may have to order it in. Again though, I think your vehicle probably specifies 75W140 (don't quote me on that though).
Thanks for the info. You are correct, 75W-140 is the correct weight. If I have to I will go to Ford, but I am trying to avoid the $18 bucks a quart. I have heard that Mobile 1 is a good synthetic oil, but I think the cost is just about the same as Ford.
Wal-Mart might carry Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube. Come to think of it Napa sells 75w140 in quarts (again, may have to have them order it in if it isn't in stock) but it's sold under the name Sta-Lube which has been around for years I believe and it is a full synthetic.
Walmart Does Not Carry The Mobil 1 Gear Lube. They Have Their Seper Tech Brand In That Weight. Kragen Auto Has The Mobil 1 At A Staggering $16.99 Per Quart. Just Bought 4 Quarts And Ouch!!!
