Hey Folks, I am looking at purchasing a 95 F150 XL. Its in pretty good shape and is pretty bare bones if you will. No air conditioning, 5 speed manual, am radio, straight 6, vinyl interior, with a cap. It has 191,000 mile on it.
I am wondering what might be some good things to look for as far as future or immediate repairs. And any ideas on cost of such repairs would be great. I know the tank straps might be something to look at to. Any 'typical' or 'prone to' problems to be aware of?
Anyway, the body is in really good shape. I believe these miles to be highway. It needs tires, the valve cover looks to be leaking......
Ran great, shifted nice, slight squeal from the front...belt?, pulley?...the oil is clean but doesnt look new.
Ofcourse they are asking a rediculous $3995. I'm thinkin maybe $1200.- $1500.
Any ideas and input would be much appreciated.

Reason: more specific title
too much alright for such hi mileage and an in line six, sounds like minor repairs needed now, but who knows what the future holds, might look for one with less miles and cost?
the NADA value of that vehicle ranges from $3500-5500 with those miles and depending on the condition. Even more if it is a 4x4. So if you can get it for $1200-1500 bucks then you're doing real well. I recently bought a 92 F150 4x4 with the same engine and 140K miles for $1500 and I thought that was a hell of a deal. I've probably put another $500 in parts replacement and tune up but I think I'm still ahead of the ballgame. I really like the truck.
well two years ago i bought my 1996 f-150 4x4 5 spd with a I6 for $5500 and it had 90,000 on it...at 125,000 miles and no problems yet might be worth looking around for the price their asking
I dont think that I mentioned it but its through a dealership. I just talked to them on the phone and they are considering my offer of $1200. thats down from 3995.
you dont expect a dealrship to let it go cheap when they're going to be responsible for repairs for a period of time (here in NY its a mandatory 30 days warranty for vehicles over 100k miles)
I'd be VERY surprised if they go for it.
Sorry, didn't mean to rain on your parade.
I just didn't think you considered that end of going thru dealerships.

Tim,
Here in Georgia we have a door posting that specifies warranty or No warranty. When a dealership takes a 10 year old truck in as part of a trade, I'd bet they aren't exposed over $1,000 dollars at the worst. Usually they will put it on the next auction carrier going by unless it is something unique or extremely clean. What fet really needs to heed is your implied warning "Caveat Emptor". You only get what you pay for on this rock. Sometimes you get lucky and get a deal. If they don't have new oil in it they are fishing for a buyer to pick it up, as is. If they get $1,200.00 I'll bet they net $200.00.
That's great. You're happy and we're all happy for you. Now do the forum thing and change all the fliuds/filters, valve cover gasket, and I'd change the belts just because it's cheap to do it. You said it needed tires so get 'er done. Check the front end while you're changing the tires. You will still only have another $200.00 in the truck and will still be very happy.
