When i change the oil pan gasket on my 1994 f-150 with a 351 should i replace the oil pump or not? and how much would it cost to do this
The oil pump is about $40-60 depending where you go, and you need some gaskets for a few more dollars, and I'd definately replace the pickup tube and suction screen if it's one piece. The screen often gets clogged with trash and flows much less than it should (which is why its a larger diameter than the tube - to allow for trash to get stuck and flow is continued for a period of time).
I'd measure the oil pressure with an external pressure gauge and if the pressure is good I'd not worry about it. If its very low, I'd replace it.
The exception to the rule (for me) is I replace them every 150K whether they need it or not, just to be on the safe side. But this stems from paranoia on my part... my first car lost pressure because the pump wore out, and the idiot light was burned out and I didn't realize it. Of course this happened 400 miles from home
