Oil Question
What brand oil is good to use on a 2005 V10?
Should I use synthetic or not?
Also should I change my oil myself or will that void the warranty?
I hear that fram oil filters are not that great to use is that true, is there another brand of oil filter I should use? or should I just stick with motorcraft filters? If I change my oil myself is there any tricks for changing oil in a V10?
Thanks once again FTE ~Gage~

Gage... for the 100, 500 and 3000 mile oil change use the motorcraft filter and oil. Cheap, best bang for the buck and did I say cheap. After that Mobile 1, Castreol Syntec or any other oil that fully complys with the Ford recommended spec is fine and will not void your warrenty.
Men are more proud of what oil is best and will argur more than a they will over Gas vs diesel engines!
I prefer to stick with 3000 mile or 90 day services 4 times a year and I pay Ford $21.75 to do it. I smoke a ciger and then get my book stamped...never ever to worry about warrenty arguments.
I am in the testing business and I read all the independent test reports.
I use full synthetics in my motorcycles and two of my low tech low cost cars.
In my $9000 V10 I will stick with Fords Motorcraft semisynth 5W20 and their FL820 filter and not give it any more thought than that.
If you change EVERY fluid to FULL synthetic you will gain a little MPG extra. It will cost you a small fortune to do this.
The true benifit to synthetics is the extended change interval.
Many of the V10 crowd here are true Mobile 1 believers and there is nothing wrong with it if it is your favorite brand.
Me? I was an old Penzoil nut case because it comes in a pretty Yellow bottle!
The tests show the MotorCraft stuff is pretty good mojo for the motor. Did I say it was cheap yet?

I used Mobil 1 for about 14 years in everything. I used it in my 87 Mustang. I used it in my 95 F150. I used it in my mowers. And I used it in my 01 Mustang. And I proceeded to dump it out at 2-3000 miles most of the time totally wasting any advantage it may have had. In the F150 I tried to run it longer, but I ended up having to add a quart at about 1500, and another about every 750 miles. I finally got tired of pouring money down the drain and went back to regular Havoline 10W-30 in that truck. In the V10 all I have run is 5W-20 Motorcraft. I change it myself and use a FL-820S filter and the change costs me about 13 bucks. From everything I have seen on Bobistheoilguy, the Motorcraft 5W-20 is a fine Group II/Group III blend and many have posted great UOA's to back it up. I ain't switching anytime soon...I have 66 quarts of the 5W-20 and 21 filters on the shelf Need more oil!

where i work i can get castrol 5 w30 and 5w40 euro spec for free but am going to opt. to let the dealer do the first 12 so i have 0 warrenty issues over oil problems, i have never on any car or truck owned ever used any other oil filter then a factory brand one, simple way to see a differance is put a after market in 1 hand and a factory in the other which is heavyier factory, look down the middle which has the bypass valve the factory, being thrifty is one thing being wise is a nother.

I am going to use the Motorcraft 5-20. I use it in my 02 Honda Accord and and it is a bargain. Most 5-20s ( not a lot of them out there ) are about a buck a quart more than Ford oil. In Canada the FL 820 oil filters are about 10 bucks and in Walmart in the US they are aound 2.98 US so I am getting my dear old Dad who winters in Yuma to pick me up a bunch. You gotta love free enterprize.
The paper element oil filters for my sick litre PSD were 38.00 a pop. What a rip-off. I am glad I dumped the thing . It needed a set of fuel filters at 80 bucks and by the end of the year I would have needed a 100 dollar air filter.
But you sure save a lot of money on fuel. But wait! Gas is cheaper than diesel right now...............mmmmmmmmmm I better pretend I was getting 24 miles to the gal. so I don't feel like such a sucker. Wrench.
Sorry I forgot to add you can change your own oil , just save all your receipts and keep a service record . I have done this for 30 years with every new vehicle I have bought and never had a problem. I would never let a stranger change the oil on my vehicles. It is not a mechanic that does this at most dealerships. It is often done by people with very little training and there are many documented cases of vehicles being started up with no oil in the crankcase. Oil changes are easy and give you a chance to check out your vehicle's underside. Buy a Fumoto Valve and you change your oil with no tools, no mess. The V10 is a super easy vehicle to service. The oil filter is vertical allowing you to fill it with oil before you screw it on and it is very easy to get at. To me changing oil is no bigger deal than filling my truck with fuel. Easy , easy , easy, . Take care of your truck and it will take care of you. Wrench.

I always have mine changed at the dealer. I used to go to Kwik Kar here in DFW but they charged $50.00 for the Motorcraft 5/20 and didn't even use a genuine Motorcraft filter. The dealer charges $29.00 so I figure it's a fair price - plus it all gets registered in their database. The truck will be sitting at 99,000 miles later today and so far no problems. The oil gets changed every 5-6,000 and at that interval it won't even be down a quart. About 30% of my miles are towing so the motor is getting worked.

Good catch Art and too late for me to edit my post!
nobrandX From what I read there is no reason not to use the Wix but the Chevron may be a tad too thick.
For years before we had these type sites and availability of information I was a Penzoil fan and I admit it was the color of the bottle. I also exclusively used Fram filters again I got suckered in by the pretty packaging.
And as long as I am admitting stupid behaviors... Years ago, I would have kicked anybodys butt who suggested my Accell coil was junk.... (there were $30 coils in those days that put out more volts and amps than the $109.99 Accell coil)...But now I know I just bought it because it looked cool! As Homer would say....Doh!
