HELP - Sound after Hog install

I installed my Hog exhaust on my 2000 F250 today and it sounds great but has a very loud flutter sound when I give it fuel. It sounds like a helicopter taking off. I was told it was my egr valve... what do you guys think? It is driving me crazy! I am not talking about the turbo whine, but a LOUD flutter! Thanks

I think it's b/c the way the turbo turbine wheel kind chops up the exhaust as it
goes out & thats the way the sound comes out? Or maybe it's b/c its v8, duramax
sounds the same with open exhaust.

With my MBRP 4" exhaust, I get the same sound at an idle. Don't notice it so much taking off or at road speed. The turbo "chop" and whistle are more noticable with a larger exhaust. This is normal, but does sound weird compared to a gasser. I do like the deeper sound at road speed.

could this be "turbo flutter" do a search you'll find tons of info about turbo flutter, guessing thats what everyone is talking about when they say it. With straight pipe like i have on right now its really bad, but sounds kinda interesting, only with acceleration.

Well I think the sound is a combination of poor firing order engine design, exhaust pulses in the wrong place at the wrong time and all colliding at the turbo in an inbalanced way. Not much you can do to change it.

I have to agree with triple K here guys, with how the PSD fires cylinders and this is feed right into the turbo which is running way hard and sucking up big gulps of the incoming charge of exhaust from the motor.

You have two choices here I figure, you could put a muffler on her, which I wouldn't LOL. The second is just stand on her and let her eat LOL... You will soon get use to this and if like most of us with PSD's find yourself soon rolling down the passenger side window as you stand on her while driving by the road construction cement barrier so you can listen better at this new found noise for pure enjoyment LOL... I laugh here at this and just yesterday with all the road construction around here, caught myself do this very thing, just so to listen to the motor while I stood on her.

Heck I even turned off the stereo to hear this too. Guess I am hopeless LOL... Heck I was even thinking yesterday I should have put the 5" straight pipe on mine instead of the 4". Guess I will have to suffer with less of this noise for now LOL...

I havne't heard one personally to know for sure, but I've been told that the people running dual exhaust don't have the flutter.

Maybe cookie88 will see the thread. He recently switched to duals on his truck.

I am not Cookie, but do also have dual exhaust, here are the specs.

3" downpipe, which help stop the flutter a little, no cat, 1' of 3" before a 3" y pipe, then 4 feet of 3" into 3' of 5" side pipes. check the gallery, a few picks, not real good but visible.

The original setup was all stock minus cat and muffler, it futtered pretty bad, I felt the same, a little embarrased by it. the dual setup helped alot because the big pipes magnified the tone, and kinda covered the flutter. the 3" DP helped to, just cause it is bigger. Just today I picked up some 5" CHROME stacks, with a SWEET ford oval on them. we will see how they sound .

Bigger exhaust will mellow the flutter a little, And Like Kwik said, the exhaust pulses, and the turbo chopping it up adds to it. Some say I-6 cummins don't flutter because it's a six, but a 414 and a 466 IH has the same flutter when straight piped. so I am leaning towards the turbo chopping it up.

Forgot from last post. No egr on a 7.3, thats a 6.0 thing, thank goodness. also if you ever hear a real loud hissing sound and the truck is a huge terd, its the EBPV, it will be very noticeable with the straight exhaust. do a search on it, and how to disconnect it.

I don't know if you have done anything else to your truck, but here is my experience: I had very heavy flutter, even with stock exhaust. I changed out the turbo intake wheel with the Wicked or Swisher wheel (same thing, different vendors, your choice) and noticed that the flutter was much subsided. How and why it did that I couldn't tell you to save my life, it's the INTAKE wheel not the exhaust. But it did make quite a bit of difference.
