I just got my 04 350 back from the body shop. Recently during a snow storm I slammed into a LARGE rock and did some substantial damage to my right front spring and tire ect. My steering wheel was completely upside down and the shop pointed out that the steering box was stripped and needed replacement. Now that I have my truck back (3 weeks later) they have over corrected the steering wheel position. my question is this; Is there an adjustment/procedure that I could do to correct this myself rather than have to take it back and deal with the body shop? Or should I just take it back? I have been told that there is a "simple adjustment" but no one that has told me this knows how to do it. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Sorry for making this a lengthie post. Thanks, Fritz
If the repairs were done correctly and nothing is out of whack, you can adjust it easily yourself. Loosen the two clamps on the sleeve that connects the tierod end at your pitman arm to the long drag link that goes to your right wheel. Make sure your wheels are straight and adjust the sleeve until the steering wheel is straight. It may take a couple of adjustments to get it exactly where you want it.
That sleeve next to the pitman arm is only if your truck is 4WD. If they aligned it properly, the wheel should have been very close to straight. Being that your wheel is crooked, I wonder if they set the toe in ??? The toe in is controlled by the sleeve that connects the 2 front wheel tie rod ends together, but to adjust that properly, the truck must be on an alignment machine.
i had to do it when i put in my lift...it is easier to do if the motor is running because that way the steering wheel will turn easier when you turn the buckle....but make sure it is in park and the brake is set so you dont have any accidents
Oops, I just assumed it was a 4WD. Surely after an impact that hard the shop would have aligned the truck and set the toe but then again they didn't adjust the wheel to center.
