When I purchased my 2000 Ex in Sep 04, one of the rear lights was out. When I removed the bulb socket, some water escaped. I replaced the bulb and all was well. Today, just after exiting, I noticed smoke coming from the left front lamp housing. Upon removal of the socket, water dropped out of this bulb housing. I removed the bulb (which broke) and applied power again. The contacts inside the socket actually started to glow. Apparently the water corroded and deformed the contacts/wires and they shorted out.
The parts guys at the dealership said this was a problem and that they had sockets in stock (a sure indicator of popular failures!)
Has anyone been able to use silicone or some other sealant to improve the water resistance of these light housings? Is there another fix?
