I rescently purchased a 2002 expedition with about 35,000 mi on it. I took it up to the place where I buy my tires and had 4 new michlein ltx m/s tires put on it, since I was having 4 new tires put on it they asked me if I wanted the front end alignment checked so I said sure. About 20 mins later he comes in and says can you come here and shows me that the idler arm is worn out, not severly but bad enough that can not check the alignment. So I was like I will see about getting that fixed and come back at a later day. About 2 days later I call the 1-800 ford number to see if the vehicle had missed any recalls and they tell me to make sure I do the tie rod inspection. Are the front ends on this vehicle defective or what. I have never seen problems this fast at this low of mileage on any vehicle. Are all of you having these same types of issues. And what else do I have to look forward to.

Reason: spelling mistake
i have a 99 with 93000 miles
I bought it used but from the original owner as far as I can tell all of the front end parts are original. Only grease fittings I can find are on the idler arm and they are easy to miss.
Did Ford say that they would mail you a copy of their "updated tie-rod inspection procedure" to be performed every 15k miles? I rec'd one in the mail back in August for my '02. The procedure letter makes it clear that any repair/replacement is at the owner's expense unless covered by any basic/extended warranty that covers those components. I understand that tie-rod end inspection/maintenance is normal on heavy and/or 4WD vehicles like ours. My '02 inspected OK at 46k when I bought the vehicle a year ago. It'll be another 2-years before I reach the 60k inspection. The previous owner's maint. records indicated no repairs, only normal maint. Publications/websites that I read before my purchase suggest that the '02's are relatively problem free. Fortunately, our year isn't part of the "fireball" recall (not yet, anyway).
When she talked about the tie rod inspection I asked her what she was talking about, and all she did was repeat the exact same thing again. There was no mention of any letter. So after doing some searching on the FTE site I guess its a do it yourself deal. LOL
