There's a straight stretch of road leading away from the place I usually fill up. On our ESOF-equipped truck, I put it in 4x4 there for about 1/8 of a mile after every fillup. If you get into that kind of habit you won't have any worries about it not working when you really need it.
The manual "*****" on my front axle seem to be fixed on my '01 Ex, and they don't have any markings to indicate "lock" or "unlock" directions. I take this to mean that they are there for decoration only, i.e. to indicate that the vehicle is a 4WD, (as if the big straight axle underneath wouldn't give it away).
My '01 has the ***** labeled AUTO & LOCK. Last month the dash switch wouldn't lock the hubs when I needed it, and the manual locks were frozen. A little WD-40 got the manuals working again. The dash switch malfunction was caused by a broke vacuum line on the passenger spindle. Monthly you should rotate the manual locks to keep them free. Switching the dash switch on every fillup just to exercise it only verifies that it works, but does more harm than good.
