i am going to get a 1968 ford f-100 this afternoon. I am looking for something that tells what the numbers and letters in the vin number stands for. The man that is selling the truck say that he put a 351C in it with a 4 speed. How can i look at this engine and tell that it is a 351C. I was also thinking if i could get that block number that would tell me. I have never done this before so where can i find the block number and also if anyone could help me with the conversion of that block number. If this help he said that the moter came out of a 73.
any help that anybody has i sure could use it
this truck has no rust under it or anything like that. The trim is in perfect shape. I think that it should be well worth the $325.
give me some advise on what else to look for on these trucks.
Thanks

Reason: BOGUS title edited to best reflect the TOPIC
IF the body is straight and has no rust its worth the 325, if the engine is a cleveland and runs it worth the 325, and if the four speed is a car tranny and works its worth the 325. so all in all you're ahead of the game.
yes to all of that. the 351c does not smoke and runs fine. the body is great. the trans i am not sure what it cam out of but i think that it did come out of a car because it does not have a granny gear as the first gear. the shifter is short like just a little bit lower then the seat. so i am guessing that it had to have came out of a car. I want to get it.
but i still need to know where i can find out how to read the vin number and where i can find the number on the block, and also how to read the block number
I have a 1967 F-250....but it has a 1969 F-250 door and Vin....so here's the breakdown of what all the different things mean with mine cited as an example:
Numbers roughly as they appear on plate:
F26YKE91183 - This is the VIN - breaks down as follows:
F26 = F-250(4WD) Y = V8(360)2V carb K = assembles in Kansas City, MO E91183 = sequence number of truck
131 U F250 3381 A24
06800 175 4000 51 - Breaks down as below:
131 = Wheelbase in inches U = Exterior paint color(Lunar green) F250 = Model 3381 = Body Type A24 = (A) specifies transmission(np435) and 24 specified the rear axle(DANA60 4.10) 06800 = Max GVW 175 = Net HP
4000 = ???
51 = ???
As for the last two, the books I had didn't specify and I would like to know....or if any of my info is wrong, please feel freee to submit a correction. There is a website that has tables of all of these things (so you can see every code possible) but I can't seem to find where I saved it.....the Ford factory shop manuals are also a good source for info about the numbers.....that's where I got alot of this, I think...
Your specific engine and axle info is "supposed" to be on metal tags fastened to the cover bolts on the axles and to a bolt near the distributor on the engine....but don't count on them being there or being readable.....I had none when I found my truck.
some one told me that you can look a 351C and it has larger (wedge heads as he refered to it). does anyone no if this is true. the heads on this motor kinda looks like what he was describing. does anyone have a picture of a 351C that they have? I know it is hard to look at small block motors to tell them apart but i was wondering about the heads on the motors if what he told me was true.
i plan on getting this truck when i get off work. I have got my truck and trailer ready to go i cant wait to get it i am so excited about this truck. I have found such a good deal i figured i would get this motor beefed up new exhaust and some flowmasters under it. I WANT IT FAST
Well the year of 73 would be correct for 351C motor (they were available to 74). Some quick things I look for... There is a way to tell by the number of valve cover bolts, but I can't recall right off (check with the crew in the C/M engine family). The upper radiator hose will go into the top of the timing cover on the front of the motor, not into the manifold (that's a Windsor mounting). The bell housing pattern is a small block pattern so the top two bolts on the back of the motor will be 5" apart from each other center-to-center (a M block is 7-1/2").
As someone mentioned earlier for $325 you can't go wrong. If the trim is really in good shape than the trim alone is worth the $325 and everything else is just frosting on the cake. The trim, new from the catalogues, range from $500-$600 for a complete set.
I say take the truck and decifer the VIN later. Take the truck say thank you and run before he changes his mind...
