Post Aerostar Conversion!?

hey there fellow aero owners...

just had a thought ... wanted to run it by you

how hard would it be to convert a extended aero van into a utility trailer?
think it would look sharp ... although open to suggestions on how to do!

has anyone else tried this before?

hope someone can offer some help/input on how do this

cheers 8-)

There was a van on ebay a few weeks ago that came with a matching utility trailer that had been made from the back half of another Aerostar. Pretty cool looking.

You should check with your vehicle licencing authority before even thinking about it. Here in Manitoba, it is not possible.

Aerostar trailer

Seems like it would look great but be too heavy.
I know a guy with an Austin-Healey 100 who tows a trailer made from the rear of another AH 100 that looks good. How about lengthening an Aerostar with a section taken from another one? Have seen it done with an early VW bus.

Cool! A six-wheel drive Aerostar, just like the 2 1/2 ton (Deuce and a half) truck of the military. I like that Might be hard to do though!

Well, I didn't think of a 6-wheel verson. Sounds like that would be a tag axle.
With the VW vans, they stayed with 4 wheels on each. The guy made a long one and then a super short one from the one he took the section out of, just for laughs.

I have seen A trailer made from an extended aerostar before , it was really neat, I have a picture of it on my computer, I dont think it would be too difficult if you have a plasma cutter and a welder, I would really like to make one myself.

Whats the problem? I know in Ont and NB. If it passes a safety. A trailer is a trailer. I was thinking if doing the same thing. As a Uhaul trailer. I have made alot of trailers. and have not had any problems getting them on the road. You reg it as a trailer. And for 20$, your in. I have seen them around. They are very nice, in the way they were done. One had a TV/DVD, and beds. For a 2 pers camper.

my grandpa made one from a full size van. but the procedure is the same for an aero...

you take off the front doors and cut the body across the roof, and floor, leaving the rear of the front door frames in tact for structural inegrity, also to make sure the sliding dor will still work. you leave the frame rails there, just cut the body off now.

assuming you took the engine, front suspension and all that crap off already, you notch and bend the frame rails in towards each other to make the tongue for the trailer. weld them at the notches and the tip.

now you have what looks like a 2 wheeled bucket layed on its side... he actually took the trailer to a machine shop and had them cut a piece of sheet metal and use a press brake to put a big "X" shape in the sheet metal. he tool that piece and cut and shaped the edges to match the van body, and welded it on. painted the whole deal and was done. it was a cool trailer, and the sliding door still worked.

i'd love to have a matching aero trailer. build a bed and cabinets in there like an RV. tv vcr, mini-fridge. have brackets on the side to hold a campstove, or BBQ. sweet eh?

Heres a modification for ya! I wish I could have gotten some inside shots. it sure looked cool from the outside. the sliding door had been modified so that the whole side of the original van slid open! it still has 4wd, but only the forward rear axle drives. is this what happens when aero owners win the lotto?

Sorry, but that looks like a photochop. The rear wheels look funky and not the same size even though they are the same rim.

Also, the sliding windows appear to overlap the wrong way & would let rain blow in.
