turbo failure

my engine sounds like its chokeing as it comes down from idle. and i have noticed a huge lack of horsepower. i think its my turbo. how hard is it to take out the turbo and re build it...like bearings or new fin. also do the cats on diesels clog easy? i dont have any smokeing so i dont think its the glow plugs or the injectors. H-E-L-P

i have a 99 PSD 7.3L im planning a cross country trip soon and am dying for any help here. i would hate to chug alug across the U.S.

when was the last time you changed fuel filter? have you pulled your intake hose off and looked at the inlet fins? they should be clean and nick free. should spin freely, (blades are sharp) if the truck is starving for fuel your turbo wont spin up as well due to lack of heat from fuel. the soot traps can clog up, my truck dosnt have one on it so i dont have to worry bout that. a failing fuel pump could give you this also. check fuel pressure also. did it do it all the sudden? possible bad fuel too? did it start soon after fillin up?

wow finally a responce....thanks barebackjake i changed my fuel filter about 1500 miles ago. this weekend i will take off the inlet and check out my fins. also i am unfamiliar with the "soot" thing. could you elaborate on that a bit. i cant thank you enough for your help. is there a way to check to see if the fuel filter is failing?

still a 99 PSD 7.3L

the soot trap it the cat....mine got in a fight with the plasma cutter.....

im not as familiar with the superduties. look for a shrader fitting somewhere on the filter assymbly to check pressures. i belive that truck is 40psi stock.

hmm, how did the old filter look? still seems like a fuel related issue, but could be an injector problem also. air filter and oil, and filter were changed at same time fuel filter was done? I would also clean battery terminals and grounds real good also. since there electrically-hydraulically injected a bad ground can make it run crappy too. has your fuel mileage changed drastically lately?

i would check fuel pressure, check the turbo, and electrical connections. have you ruled out bad fuel?

I agree with jake, you need to rule out some other simple possibilities first. I always try to rule out fuel problems first. Second, a bad CPS can really make these trucks do some goofy things. If you don't have a spare CPS to try, it is a really good idea to get one.

Is it cold enough that you could be gelling a little bit at the fuel pump?

How long have you had the pickup, how many miles, and any mods?

In the cases of failed turbo's I have seen, the truck will run pretty normally at idle, low speeds, and slow accelleration, but blow a lot of black smoke under hard acceleration and at higher speeds.

ok ive had the truck since july but run it across the country twice. its got 67,000 miles on it and i just changed the oil and air filter. the fuel filter was changed 1500 miles ago but it was BLACK and word on the street says that a black fuel filter = injector problem. but after all the random mom and pop gas stations i went to i figured it was the poor fuel. i had a chip in it but after a trip to the dealer they said it was malfunctioning so i pulled it. but even prior to the pulling of the chip i had noticed that there was a lack in horsepower. my driving is so random. some days alot some days a little so i dont really have a good grip on fuel consumption. but i did add the juice w/ attitude package and even on level 5 there isnt much performance notice which is really hard to believe since thats almost 75 + horsepower. something serious has to be messed up here.....

again.....H..E..L..P

Camshaft Position Sensor--it's a little sensor (it's easy to change) that allows tells the computer the timing of the engine--failure results in inappropriate timing if guel injection or no fuel injection. They are a lot cheaper to buy someplace other than your Ford dealer.

If you're not loosing more than normal amount of crankcase oil between changes, or getting oil in your coolant, or loosing coolant, you probably don't have O-ring problems.

Have you had it checked for stored codes? (most chain autopart stores will read them for free)
