OD light is blinking....
I own an 89 E350 Box truck diesel with e40d. Is there a way to get trouble codes out without a reader?
If so are the codes published somewhere? IF not can someone suggest a good manual (other than the helm manuals)

When this happened to me recently the tranny shifted real hard also. Turned out the wirting harness to the tranny was slightly unplugged at the tranny under the van. A few years ago I couldn't start the van and it turned out that that same plug had come apart because the factory catches on it had broken off so it was tie wrapped together. Those tie wraps had started to fail.

You will need a scanner to read the codes. Most shops will be able to read them for you or you can buy a cheap scanner for something like $30.
Before you can effect repairs you have to know what the code is.
