I have an 86' f-150, and when i back up with the wheels turned sharp, the engine wants to stall...and sometimes it does. It used to want to do it at a stop sign, starting out from a dead stop...but after replacing the plugs that has stopped...for now at least. does anyone have any suggestions to why it is doing this?? also after the truck warms up, the rpm's cary from like 900 down to 300 or 400...it stays ar 800 or 900, then drops for a sec. to 300 them back up....could it be a vacuum leak?? i'de appreciate any help. thanx....
Sounds like the common throttle body build-up problem. Take the throttle body area and the idle bypass solenoid and clean them. They will get a gum build-up and cause erratic idle and stalling.
Thanx...i'll try that. I replaced the throttle body gasket in auto 1 class last year, but didn't clean the throttle body. I also replaced the IAC, but not with a new one....I used one we had in out shop..they are like $80, so i didn't buy it.just borrowed one of the shops..hahaha! I can just use carb./choke cleaner....right? thats what we usually use. I'll be doin this in my auto 2 class, so i'll have ASE cert. mech. watchin me...lucky for me, or i'de screw somethin up!! any other ideas would be a great help..i'll let u all know if it works...laterz!
I brought it into Auto 2 class today, and had my teacher look at it. He and I went for a short drive so he could see what i was talking about. The RPM's it was running at in Drive was about 600. We turned the idle up to about 800-900, and it fixed the wanting to stall problem. He said it was an automatic so you could do that. It also doesn't have the rpm fluctuating from high to a quick low burst anymore....I guess he fixed it! BOOYA!
HAHA...don't say that! I could have gone through and replaced as much as i wanted to, but it's for sale....if i can fix the problem for a bit longer, i don't want to have to invest in it if i don't have to!!!!! It fixed the stalling problem though! This means i didn't have to invest $80 in sensors!!! If i was gonna keep it, i would have gone through with a scanner and looked for codes or gasket leaks...but i'm selling it. i just want it to run. lol......My teacher is really good at cars, and stuff. He teaches lots...i just didn't want to replace anything, so he did the next best thing..bumped idle to fix it! i know it may only be temporary....but oh well. if it goes again, i'll look into it. laterz!
