You're removing the axleshafts or the i-beams?
I know that the ball joints don't come off to remove the axleshafts. The axleshafts come off so you can remove the steering knuckle.
In the case of i-beams, I'm not sure, but, because the steering knuckle doesn't attach to anything else (except the tie rods), I wouldn't expect it to be necessary to remove the ball joints to get the i-beams out.
