Can anyone say for sure wether the automatic transfer case off of an '88 will bolt right into an '89 with a manual transfer case. Both are 302s with AOD trannies. I'm looking at an 89 Bronco that is in immaculate condition. If I can bolt the autotransfer case right in then I'll be set. I realize that the linkages / wiring won't line up and that I won't be able to engage the 4 wheel drive, but I need to get a vehicle right now and if it isn't this Bronco then it will probably be a car.
Physical dimensions should be the same since you CAN swap the other direction and eliminate the electronic shift if you take the time to do the swap. As you mentioned, actually using the T-case will require a lot of additional electronic equipment. If you are just looking to "fill the gap" so to speak so you can get the vehicle up and running, yes, youshould be able to swap it in.
personally the electric tcase are very problemmatic . the manual tcase is the only way to go for real reliability. i say its not worth the time and effort to make that electric one work
It's not that I want to make the electric one work, it's that I'm short of time and need to make the truck go. So it's a temporary solution while I fix the manual t-case. I can swap the t-cases in an evening cause I use my work garage and can only work in there at night.
Great news... I did buy the 89 this morning and I will pick it up right after work today!!
The only other thing I could come up with is that the shift lever is out of adjustment. Noone has played with it though, do they need periodic adjustment just like anything else?
sure do. hit the joints with some penetration oil and make sure the fluid level is good . this bronco wouldnt have a body lift on it by chance does it?
Nope. But on the way home it started slipping out of gear when coasting to the lights and once I let off the gas. As soon as you push on the gas it grabs again. Then started it after supper to take around behind the house and it made some nasty noises. Tensioning in the T-case then clang/ tensioning - clang.'As well she's dripping some nice red ATF with aluminum additives from the bottom of the t-case. Just as I suspected. T-case needs to be fixed. So I'll yank that out soon and slap the other e-shift one in just so I can drive the truck. It's going to be my daily driver cause the g-friend drives the car. Thanks for the tips.
