My 82 F150 with 351w is officially drving me nuts......after experiencing shutdown problems.....I replaced distributor (thanks again slik), battery, cables, module, solenoid, starter, coil...and tried to clean up every electrical connection I could. Thought I had it licked.....today while driving...it began shutting down....only to fire back up..and let loose the loudest backfire I have ever heard....like a 30/30 shot! A few blocks down the road it shut down again....and I could not restart....2 hours later...returned to truck and it started up...it;s back in my driveway now. Any ideas??
I think one mil nailed it with the bad ignition switch. You can run a temporary jumper wire from the hot terminal on the solenoid to the coil positive terminal, to bypass the switch. This also bypasses the resistor wire, so don't run the engine for long like this, only long enough to verify a bad switch.
