Question bad fuel milage

I am new to this site, so far enjoyed it. I have a 2003 7.3 F250 Shortbed FX4 I had 265/75/16 Steeltex tires on my truck and i was getting about 17mpg. I put 285/75/16 BFG on and my milage dropped to around 14-15 mpg. My tuck is stock, any advise would be appreciated.

im not familiar w/ tire sizes but if they are BIGGER than your old ones then yes you should see a small drop in mpg's but probable not as much as your seein' i had the same problem w/ mine about 6 months agoe. i went from getting 18.5 mpg's around town to only about 14-15. i changed my fuel filter, drained my fuel water seperator and even had my injectors cleaned only to have no success. I THINK and have heard that the quality of our PREMIUM DIESEL has gone south and i firmly believe it. ever since the oil shortages and the price of diesel is skyrocketed i think they're making more diesel from recyled oil and everybody i talked to recently seems to have the same problem we're having. so is there an easy solution, yeah, look up BIODIESEL on the net and then start raisin hell to get your local distributor to bring it to your home town. i know i cant wait for the stuff to come here!!!

Taller tires will throw off your speedometer and odometer which will mess up your calculations if you base miles traveled on the odometer when calculating. The odometer will display fewer miles than the actual miles you have traveled. The additional weight and higher final drive ratio resulting from the larger tires will also effect your actual mileage. You may be seeing the result of a combination both these things for that big of a difference in mpg with all else being equal, driving style, fuel quality, etc.

Stroker250: I put the same tires with larger wheels (10') and after recalibrating for the larger tires mine did the same!!
