thats a big jump i dont know what to think of that...My friend has a extended cab psd 4x4 has a chip, exhaust, intake mod and pedal mod to get rid of the dead spot.He claims to get around 22mpg empty and about 14mpg pulling his fifth wheel to california from michigan. My crewcab bone stock is getting 16.97 with winter blend fuel.Im very happy with it since my 5.4 got about 12mpg.So next im getting a programmer and exhaust.
do they help? I just talked to a guy and he said it took him from 16-26 mpg. his is a lowered 2wd 99 with a k&N and edge attitude tuner.
I don't believe that for a second. While some chips can make your truck a little more efficient(1-2mpg). Your usually to busy with the right foot after getting a chip to get much of a gain. I ran a Superchips tuner for trip and tried to drive it normal and got maybe 2mpg better.
I honestly think you'll stay the same for mileage at absoulte best, & I really dont
think thats the case. I added a module to mine & I lost mileage, gained power
but now I have to drive slow, I'm seriously thinking about pulling the sorry sob
out. If I were you & I knew then, what I know now I wouldn't have bought it.
I think it has alot to do with fuel curve and how the chip is programed or the how the programmer changes the computer.I know 2 people both with 7.3 and both where over 20mpg driving sensible. One guy had a chip done by pauls high performance in michigan and he actually burns the chip to your situation. Then another friend bought a 4 way chip or something like that had exhaust and all kinds of mods and he got over 20mpg empty too.So i think alot has to do with how u drive it and the program that is put into the chip or programer.
With all my mods I have notice a 1-2mpg increase. Stock I would run 13-14mpg, now, with winter blend fuel, I'm around 14-15mpg, even hit 16 my last fill up. A lot of it is has to do with your right foot, as well as what kind of driving you do. Mine will vary a lot from highway to stop and go.
26mpg is extremely high for a psd, not very likely he's getting that, or he's reading it off his overhead consol, which are never right.
And you will find that the only real way to know what MPG your'e getting is to keep a log of your fillups and mileage. Then average them over several fillips. I have noticed that I can get three or four more gallons of #2 in each tank if I just keep trickling it in. So what does that say about the accuracy of a one fillup mileage check? I have kept a log of my fillips and mileage since the day I got my truck and can tell you I get 16 MPG empty and 14 pulling my TT.
I personly don't think that a chip by it self will get you as much as doing the Air Filter, 4" Exhaust and a chip with a setting of 65hp. I picked up around 2mpg when I did this same thing. I'm not a light footed drive but I'm not drag racing every thing that pulls next to me either. So I feel good about what I'm getting. I would love to get 20+mpg..
What is the intake mod and the pedal mod???
INtake mod is taking out the stock air box putting in one like a AFE or K&N Fipk and as for the pedal mod there is a mod you can do to get rid of the dead spot in the pedal.
Yep, I know it's really hard to do. But I have done it in the past Didn't get over 55 with no jack-rabbit starts for 2 tanks and it didn't help enough to cure my need for speed!! Last 10 tanks before Programmer average was 18.1!! Last 10 tanks before larger tires 16.1!! last 10 tanks 15.1!!
In 60,000 miles i have averaged 16.02mpg. Since i got my scmt it looks like my mileage increased .17mpg. I have to admit at first it really hurt my mileage cause i couldnt keep my foot out of it I got about 14 or so for several tanks. Now that i drive normal again, it has made a slight difference in mileage but not enough to make to justify the cost of the tuner. The power increase makes it worth every penny to me.!!

Chips might help with mileage, but that shouldn't be the reason you get it. They vary so much from one truck to another it's hard to tell what you improvements you are gonna get. The increase in power and pleasure of driving is/should be the main reason to get a chip, if you get better fuel mileage, that is usually an added bonus.
