What 390 heads are available for my motor? Its not gonna be a race motor so it will need to have power in the low to mid range. What would you guys recomend?
also, what r the differences between a side oiler and top oiler? wouldnt it be cool if i found out i have a side oiler? the oil filter screws in sideways i thought that had something to do wit it but prbly not, thnx
In that case, the easiest thing IMO is to go to the junkyard and get yourself a set of later 360 heads. Look for D2TE or later. They have hardened seats which are fine as long as you dont grind too much on 'em (induction hardened). If you just want low to midrange, then just plug the EGR ports on the tops of the exhaust ports. Get an Edelbrock Performer 4-barrel intake, or a stock cast 4-barrel intake to match the ports on the heads. The Performer RPM will require modification of the intake ports to match it, since the intake has bigger ports than the heads. Plus, the Performer will keep the velocity up to make power where you want it.
Edit: You posted while I was typing. Top oiler and side oiler is a 427 thing. If you have any FE other than a 427, you have a top oiler. Period. Basically, a side oiler has an additional oil gallery through which the mains and cam are fed together, where the top oiler goes down past the cam to the mains. The side oiler is the better system, but unless you're running an FE in Nascar (yeah right any more...) you'll never notice.

If you get the D2TE heads they may or may not have the provisions for air injection in the roof of the exhaust runner. If they just have the bump in the roof you can grind that flat with the roof of the head. What kind of pistons are you looking to run? The C8AE-H heads will have that bump in the roof too.
