Question Removing Cats

I was wondering what I would gain by removing the cats on my 86.
Will the gas milage increase or decrease. What about the power?-that is what I'm really after..But I don't want some loud abnocksous redneck truck. I already have one of those complete with the 6 CB antenna the chrome tool box.
I still want it to be quiet.
Dustin
It is a 86 F150 EFI 302 AOD w/3.55 single slip

I lost about 20 lbs of weight when I took my cat off. I also gained gas mileage and power, but i attribute that to the old cat being near clogged and melted on the inside. New cat works great for the emission test we are required to take. Plenty of controversy over this topic. In your vehicle I would like to see real world benefits (that you can phyically notice) for power and gas milage. Confident in the lowering of "emissions" for state inspection, but i don't know what part of the environment I'm helping....As long as the state says I passed.

I replaced the converter on my single-exhaust 1983 F-150 with a pair of cats and new pipes all the way to the back. The 2 cats only cost $100 total. The new system really sounds good.

Question Cats

If I just removed them and hallowed them out with a piece of pipe would that work??? I want more power and gas milage but not a dramatic increase in noise level.

Don't just hollow them out and put them back on. You will create too much back pressure. Better off hollowing them out and welding a piece of pipe inside the cat body if you have to keep the cats on for visual inspection.

Any state that does motor vehicle inspection will likely fail you for missing emission equipment even if they don't require a smog test. I say that, but it is pretty easy to find a mechanic in some places that will ignore the missing cat and other obvious emissions equip.

I also have a 93 Safari van with the 4.3 and took the cat off and installed a test pipe and was amased at the power I got.We don't have any state inspections.
I am thinking of doing my Seville that way also.
The Van also runs cooler now.
