I get white smoke when I punch it then it clears. truck has great power and runs smooth. I have bad leak at return fuel line on 3 injectors and I have a kit to replace o-rings, caps and return lines. Will this leak cause smoke and should I remove injectors to replace copper washers or just rplace o-ring and return parts. New owner 87 6.9 350 dualey.
How much smoke? Does it occur under load as well? I dont think that the leak on the return lines is the cause. How many miles? I have the same truck (although dump body) and with just under 100K she only smokes for a minute when started then nothing. Im wondering if it could be the result of blowby in the cylinders when under power.
Any leaking caps may contribute to air intrusion in the fuel system, air could cause a white/grey smoke. Depending on injector mileage, not required to replace copper seals unless there is a problem.
Truck has 102000 ? I noticed when i started this moring it stalled then was a 2 or 3 recycle of glow pluf befor it started. Founnd air when i bleed fuel filter on tire type bleeder .
Any chance the CDR valve has been checked/cleaned/replaced? Cruising throught the forums here I noticed that there can be problems with engine oil entering into the combustion chamber if the unit is faulty. CDR may not be removing all the oil from the airflow, allowing it to enter when under load. Just a thought. Also since you are new to the game, make sure you dont depress the schrader valve on the fuel filter post if the engine is not running! Did it stall after you pressed the valve and found air? I think the GP recycle is normal after a stall if the engine was not running very long. Then again I am a newbie too!
white smoke is usually air in the fuel system, raw fuel or anti freeze burning. If the return caps are leaking, thats prob the best fix. I wouldnt remove the injectors til they need it. If the engine is running rough, fix the fuel return problem first, then attack the injectors. you can check them by "shorting" them out one at a time by loosening the fuel line on top and letting the fuel pressure drop. One that makes little or no difference is the bad guy. Loosen all the nuts before starting the engine at operating temp, snug them back up and then loosen them with the engine idling. DONT GET CAUGHT UP IN MOVING PARTS.
Replaced o-rings and return caps and hoses. Replaced fuel filter with new and the problem has gone away no more large amounts of smoke. thanks all for your help George aka asluff.
