Hello everyone. I will be soon driving and I got my dad is going to let me have my grandpas 79' ford pickup. It is a cool truck, A/C, power brakes, power steering. I enjoy riding dirtbikes, so I am going to make a 4 x 4 out of it. We are going to do a 4 wheel drive conversion :/ soon and I was wondering whats the best setup? I was thinking a dana 44 front axle. We want to find an old truck with a 4" or 6" lift that we could just yank everything off at the yard. Will the transfer bolt up and does the floor need much modification? How is the 351 cleveland? Whats the best way to get some power out of it without killing gas mileage? I was thinking some headers and maybe a set of heads eventually. I would like a 600 holley on it. Any ideas or thoughts you guys could give me on how to make my truck the ultimate 4x4 would be cool.
Hate to burst your bubble, but this is ALOT of work. You are better off to sell the truck and buy a 4x4. This has been discussed numerous times before, do a quick search.
Howdy,
I'm Assuming your about 16 like i am. Welcome to FTE. Search this forum for "4wd conversion" Most people tell you to buy a new truck, but it can be done. You are correct about the D44 front. That is what came stock in the 1/2 ton 4x4's. Are you sure your engine is a 351 Cleveland? If it is stock it should be a 351 M.
Me and my dad are pretty handy. He worked for honda for 15 years, now hes into vintage mustangs building and restoring them. The valve covers are huge I am assuming its a c?
Sounds like you got it figured out. You should try to get a whole 4wd truck for parts, because there you will need quite a few thing that you may not know you need. The hardest part will be with the frame, because the front crossmembers are different on a 2wd. My aim screename is kw79ford.
