Heater problems

My heater in my 852' f-150 flareside isn't keeping the driver side window (front one) clear. After warming the truck up for a least 5-10 minutes the windshield will clear. Then about 3-5 miles down he road the driver side windshield starts to fog than about a minute it starts to ice up on the inside all the time. The only way to prevent this is by opening a window till I get to town (10minute drive) and the does it start to clear of enough to where I can shut the window. The rubber boot for the shifter on the floor is torn to pieces to could this be the problem?

Heater problems

I would start with the absolute basics here. Start with a thermostat. Then check the hoses and heater core for flow.
Let us know after that.

Mine did this right after I bought it, and there was junk that people had layed on the dash board over the years accumulated in the duct, part of an old lcd watch, and other little papers and stuff.

Its not that cause me and my dad have replaced the top dash pad--it was off for awhile but when we put it back on I checked it to make sure, and I don't put stuff on the dash for that reaseon and also so I don't break that speaker outlet thingy.

Heater problems

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Mar-02 AT 10:52 AM (EST)]There is a vacuum motor that controls the air-flow between the floor outlet and the defrost outlet. The motor has two vac hoses....if the motor works at all, those hoses could be reversed. If that is the case, air-flow to the defrost duct will not be correct. Check the vaccum motor for operation and check the vacuum hoses for correct attachment. The red color connects to port #5 on the function switch and to the 90degree fitting on the vac motor. The yellow color hose connects to port #2 on the function switch and to the straight fitting on the vac motor. That vac motor controls a door in the plenum that directs air to the floor only (full vac at motor(red) closes door to defrost outlet and allows only floor air)....partial vac to motor(yellow) allows air to both floor and defrost, no vac to motor allows no air to floor, only to defrost ducts. If the vac motor funtions properly, something is wrong with the door operation.....maybe stuck/something

Your symptoms are typical of a leak in the heat exchanger (heater core). It doesn't fog up at first 'cause the coolant is same temp as the glass, but when the thermostat opens you get a gush of warm coolant that creates a warm fog on the cold glass and presto - fog and ice inside until it finally warms up enough to defrost.

Not a serious leak but dangerous from the standpoint of driving that way. You probably have smelled a slight coolant smell when it happens. My 86 is doing the same thing right now and I'm just waiting for a warmer day. ( -10F this am )

I went with my first theory because he said it was the drivers side only. I think all the other posts are valid reasons for the problem, but you would think it would cause a problem across the whole windshield. I am thinking the defroster plenum has one common source doesn't it?

Could the fan be going bad, if it was wouldn't the furthest place away from the source would get the least amount of heat right?

See if both heater hoses at firewall are hot after a long run.I don't care to change thermostats on small blocks. If they check out its a problem with dash components then.flaps/cables/debri/hoses

Yeah, Franklin2, I see that now in the original post. Normally it does affect the whole windshield. Mustange70, you're not breathing on the windshield are you?? lol

Are you getting in the truck with your hair still wet from the shower? That is just a lot more humidity you would be putting into the air.
