running rough

my 1986 f-150 seems to run rough when it idles or is in park. seems to
be choking out,missing. i have to give it gas in park or a stop light to keep running. any ideas what it could be. friends tell me to buy a new carburator. thanks.

Pull the Carb apart and clean it with carb. spray. U might also want to adjust the jets and idle screws. Spray carb spray around different parts of the engine where you have gaskets to, and listen for it to change idle speed. this indicates a gasket leak. u might want to change plugs too and see how bad they are..i changed mine recently, and it helped my 302 efi. U problably won't need a new carb., just clean it. It might also be a bad EGR?? i don't know much about EGR controls, but i've seen them cause rough idles and stuff in vehicles. hope that helps..laters

I have an 83 that does the same thing. After a lot of frustration I did narrow it down to the carb. I have not taken mine apart yet, but will soon. Getting the whole carb clean will help a lot. The rebuild kit is only $40, a lot better than the price of new carb. You may just need to get the jets and power valve good and clean.
