OK, I replaced the ball joints in my 87 F150 4x4 last weekend, everything went well, followed the Chilton manual. No problem.
Talking to a friend at work today he says he replcaed his ball joints several times (he has a 91) using quality ball joints (Moog, Ford, etc) and they usually went out at about 15-20k. Apparently a tech at the Ford dealer told him there is a precise procedure to be followed on the TTB ball joints, involved a bunch of things like loading the knuckle while torqing the nuts, etc. He had the dealer do his 70k ago and has had no problems.
Anyone have any knowledge on this "correct" procedure? Would an actual Ford service manual shed any light on this?
Yeah,There is.80-97 with TTB,Not possitive on the exact no's but it's something like torque lower balljoint to 70-85 lbs. then upper to 75-80 lbs. and then the lower to 150 lbs. (this is what MOOG uses) The factory is a little lower, like 65 lbs. on upper and 100-110 lbs. on lower.
The Chilton Manual I have said: Lower to 80ft-lbs, upper to 100ft-lbs, then lower to 110ft-lbs. I guess I'll find out how long they will last, I used TRW HD ball joints.
As long as you keep them lubed they should last almost forever.I always check the specs. that come with the balljoints because they're usually a little higher than factory.Chilton,Motor, and Mitchell generally provide info. they get from the factory. You'll be alright though.
