Hi;My 1989 F150 has a 302 engine with a 4 speed transmission.Would a 4 speed with overdrive out of a 1990 F350 fit my truck?The F350 has a 351 engine.My main concern is the splines in the clutch and the drive shaft.Would I have to get a new clutch and a different drive shaft to fit the F350 transmission?And how about the cross member?Also,the 4 speed with the overdrive is this the ZF transmission?
Thanks for your information;
Jack
For the 300/302/351W there are two 90's truck transmissions that you can easily use, one being the Mazda often found in the F150/bronco, and the ZF S5-42 found in the F250/F350/F450.
The Mazda looks like this:
And the ZF looks like this:
The Mazda has a nicer first gear for unloaded take-offs, as its reasonably low, but not a really deep granny gear like the ZF. Even in my F350 crewcab (which has the ZF), I rarely use 1st unless I've loaded the truck either with a bedful of bricks, engines or whatnot, or hitched a large trailer. Its a real granny gear.
You'll need a 302 flywheel, and the later year pressure plates will bolt to it. Absolutely do not use a 351W flywheel, it will rattle your engine to pieces very quickly, the balance difference is that far off.
You'll need to use the clutch appropriate for the transmission you install, so if you install say, a 92 ZF, buy yourself a 92 clutch and pressure plate, and you're good to go. The clutches and pressure plates are different between the Mazda and the ZF, and I'd *guess* both are different as to what you have now with your four speed. But I'm guessing, I don't know for sure.
Hi;I am getting the Mazda 5 speed transmission tomorrow.Why is there dexron/mercon transmission fluid in all of the 5 speed transmissions?I think I will replace that with either 5w30 or 5w20 motor oil.To me oil will lubricate much better than automatic transmission fluid don't you think?I never knew that auto trans fluid was in manual transmissions until my son had a problem with his 5 speed in his Dodge Daytona and it had the red auto trans fluid.
Thanks;
Jack
