I live in a rural farm area and my 95 Bronco has done a good job for me so far in hauling a trailer, and various workhorse jobs. When I first got the vehicle about two years ago I noticed that on hills or grades there was a "washboard" or motorboat effect (when giving it more gas), and it was not possible to accelerate or realize any drive torque to overcome the uphill resistance without having that effect. That problem has now become much worse and the "slippage" (if that's what it is) occurs without a load and even on level roads. I'm thinking the transmission may be slipping and needs work. The problem only occurs after second gear, which means I have to downshift to avoid the slippage. This vehicle has overdrive. Any good advice about this?
well your tranny is an E4OD , problem being if it is infact toast then your looken at an easy 2k to get it fixed and thats on the cheap side. I hope that you werent towing in OD were you? but first i would get the tranny serviced with new fluids and filter. then drive and see how it is then if it continues you will need to find a good tranny shop.
does your bronco have a tranny cooler if so great . if not then that is something you for sure need to help extend the life of your tranny.
Sorry it took me so long to advise what I did. Thanks to Kemicalburns for the advice, was right on the money, except the good tranny shop I found put in a used tranny from a wreck and it cost me less than 2K. Seems OK so far. Now another problem, windsheild wipers (& washers) stopped working overnight. Fuse is OK, sprayed harness contacts plugged into windshield wiper assy at firewall location and plugged back in. Still nothing. Since both wipers and washers do not work I suspect it has to be a common electrical (not fuse) defect instead of the wiper motor since the washers do not work either (unless both functions go bad if the motor goes bad). Any thoughts anyone?
they put in a used tranny? man i wouldnt have done that. a rebuilt e40d would cost around 1600 then figure another 500 for labor at most and then your close to your 2k mark but with a tranny warranty. what year tranny did they get because any e4od produced before 93 had problems and were very weak. it may work now but i wouldnt hold my breath.
The multifunction switch - or wiper switch on the column - are very bad about electrical failures because there's so much stuff crammed into that lever. Try turning on the wipers and pressing the lever up slightly - not enought to activate the turn signal. Try wiggling it, and the wipers may come back on.
