Charges...but barely

I just bought an 81 F-100 Custom with a 300-6, and auto tranny, 2WD. I notice that the headlights are more yellow than white. They illuminate the road OK, but I think they should be brighter. I put a meter on the battery terminals while she is running, 13.9V. I then turn the lights on and the voltage drops to 12.4V. Once I turn the lights back off, the voltage climbs slowly back to 13.9. Now this tells me that it's charging, but I was expecting more around 14.7 volts. Am I a worry wart, or is this maybe an indication of impending doom?

Clean all the terminals on the alternator and the regulator. Also clean the area where the alternator is mounted. If none of this fixes it, I would try replacing the alternator.

Thanks for the reply. I'll give it a shot and see what happens. I've ALOT to do on this thing, so I'll just add it to my list.
