Is there any way to get rid of the AC compressor? Do you need an extra pulley? My AC doesn't work, and I'm not going to spend the $ to fix it, so I think it would be a lot easier to work on the van with all the hoses and stuff out of the way. Any thoughts?
Alpharetta, Georgia huh. I'll bet by June you'll be singing another tune. Doesn't it get mightly warm down there? You might be better off just buying the shorter serpentine belt (without A/C) to bypass the A/C compressor, but leaving the components in place. You don't gain that much more room with it gone and (at least on a 4.0L) if you do want to service something, all you have to do is remove 4 topside bolts to move the A/C compressor around.

I do believe it get's quite warm there.
I would look to see what exactly is wrong with the A/C. Replacing A/C components are not too tuff and R-134a is pretty cheap. I replaced the A/C system on my Taurus. I thought that it would be impossible and was hesitant at first. But once I got into it, it was just like working on any other part of the engine.
All I know is that the compressor doesn't come on. This is really pretty far down on my priority list, though, after fixing the passenger window, the automatic doorlocks, the leaky valve cover gaskets, the pencil rolling around inside the dash (drives me nuts!) One thing I have noticed is this little tiny hose looking thing that's broken, coming out of the area where the blower is. Is that part of the AC sustem? I thought it was a wire at first, but its hollow.
What should I do, just put it back together somehow?
BTW, this one is black, but there's some others that are yellow with little black connectors and t's.
Well, it doesn't seem to hurt anything. One other thing I've noticed is that it won't go into fast idle when I first crank it up. Anyone have any suggestions for that?
I believe the vacuum line you are refering to goes to an AC vent door Servo that is, from the front of the car looking toward the engine, just to the right of the blower and back about 4 to 6 inches. You will see a cylinder with a rod going up and at the base is a vacuum line in that also should be broken. When mine broke, I cut off a small piece of the vacuum tube and took it to Napa. I got a size of rubber vacuum line that just fit snuggly over the smaller line. I then pushed it on both ends and put a small tie wrap on both to snug it down.
You really need to fix this as it can affect the overall vacuum in the system.
