REALLY close to buying...

Hi, Im a newley registered member of this site but I have been lurking around for a while as a guest and gathering some info. (I read the bible, faq..)

I have a concern and I would like to get some reasurance on what I am thinking about doing. Bare with me if this becomes really long...

Ok I own a 2004 SVT Cobra and I'm looking for a diesel truck to have as a daily driver and keep the Cobra as a weekend car. (I've owned several F-150's but never a diesel)

Now first off I REALLY like the new '05 SD's I test drove one A 2005 F-250 SuperCrew 6 3/4 ft.
6.0L AUTO 4x4 Lariat FX4 package basically loaded and I am SOLD on the interior, the exterior, the fit and finish, the whole look, the price they offered me, the drive, the comfort, but the only thing that is holding me back from buying this truck is the reliablility issues I hear/read about the 6.0. I know each engine is diffrent and some might break at 5 miles others might go until 500,000 miles but I also know that they both probably were driven diffrently. In my case This truck I am looking to buy I plan on keeping it 100% Stock (Except for tint and maybe some good oil ) I will be doing VERY minimal towing MAYBE once every 3 months, and I'm mainly going to use the bed for carrying items. So Im not gonna really be beating on this truck just mostly daily city/highway driving with a little towing here and there and payload hauling once in a while. Gas to me is not a problem as long as I can get above 15 MPG so the only damnt hing from stopping me from buying this truck is the drivetrain issues.

So my main questions is do you guys think that I would have any problems with this truck considering its an '05 (maybe the newer motors have a few less problems with them) and I wont be doing barley any towing and plan on keeping it bone stock do you see it as being reliable for me if I treat it good?

Thanks to everyone in advance and I apologize for the long post just had an issue on my chest I needed to get some advice. Thx.<!-- / message -->

p.s. I also posted this is the 6.0L section too.

I can't see justifying the cost of a diesel over a gasser if you're not going to tow with it. Have your dealer search his computers for the perfect gasser.

For the record, my bro-in-law has an '04 6.0 and has had zero problems. The motor's bone stock, truck has a 4" lift with 35's and it still gets up and goes no problem.

I get what you're saying but I have already owned a few gas F-150's and I want something diffrent, also the price diffrence is not a problem for me. Mantinece I hear is roughly the same for a gasser and diesel until you get into the high miles.
Thx for the input, sounds like your bro-in-law has got a nice truck there.

Hell if money's no object then by all means get the 6.0! You'll love it. A buddy of mine bought the programmer for his 6.0L and it roasted his 33's until he ran out of road and had to let up.

Good luck with the truck! Oh, and my 2 year old nephew loves to throw it in my face everytime his dad beats me in his diesel.. Damn you 6 liters!!!

Well I wouldent say money is no object but I would pay extra for a diesel.
LOL and DAMN that truck sounds sick I know there are a lot of goot programmers and chips for these trucks and I MIGHT look into one in the far future. Hopefully I'll have the 6.0 Grin

My Brother has a 6.0 that we use to pull skid loaders and tractors with for the landscaping business he owns. He has had no problems whatsoever in the last 40000+ miles. Great Truck.
However, I have a V-10 and I love the engine. It's not a diesel...and that's not a bad thing. My oil changes are definatley a lot cheaper than the diesels. An oil change is more expensive due to the amount of oil the diesel engine needs compared to my 6 qts in the V-10.

Before you buy the truck, just take a V-10 for a drive for comparison. I think you might like the power.

I have had gassers all my life and they are nice, but I love the fact I have something that can pull the hell out of anything. The V10 was impressive and yes a bit quieter, however, I don't like to be nickled and dimed to death on the gas mileage. Not to mention the 6.0's torque is pretty incredible even empty! I'm averaging 15 mpg and I don't drive lightly. I'm not a lead foot either, but it's nice to not really have to baby it. Most guys are getting 10-12 at best with their v10.
I think the real question is also where do you live? If it's warm, then go with the diesel. If it's really really cold in the winters, you might consider the V10.
Bottom line the Diesel is quite a different experience that I'm really enjoying. Life is short and I'd like to say "yea, I used to have one of those old power monster turbo deisels" when we're all driving hybrids 10 years from now. You can check out my pics too! There's my 2 cents.

15 mpg is a dream of mine. I had it in the beginning, first three or four tanks, and it has been down hill ever since. The more miles I get on the truck the worse the mileage gets. Couple that with the +0.20 a gallon price for fuel, and the 5K hit for the diesel. I am not a happy camper with my 6.0L. My father in law gets 17-18 around town with his 7.3. I was getting that mileage with a Dodge Cummins before the Ford. Should have saved my money and got a V10. The extra money I saved not paying a preimum for the diesel, along with the per gallon saved would more than make up for any decrease in mileage, if the V10 even gets worse mileage. A guy I work with bought an Excursion with the 6.0 and is seeing the same mileage I am. It just plain sucks, including fuel.

Thenetguy I am seeing 13 right now so if guys are getting 12 with a V10 it was a way better purchase.

Thats sucks to hear about your gas problem, can I ask where do you live and do you do any regular towing?

Live in the flat state of Michigan. I have yet to hook a trailer to the truck so all mileage to date is unloaded. I hate to see the mileage hauling something. Engine is stock.

Also wanted add a comment about oil seeing something posted above. The $80 dealer oil changes are hitting me hard too. 13-15 quarts and a $30 filter, yes that is what the dealer charged me for the filter $30. This was the dealer I bought it from. Yes I know I could do them myself but with the issues I read about with these trucks any excuse the dealer could have to screw me out of warranty work I beleive they would. Especially engine work, and there seems to be no shortage of engine type trouble. I have already almost been stranded due to a bad EGR valve at less than 5500 miles. Getting it changed at the dealer creates a paper trail of records.

Well I have a 2004 F350SRW Lariat with all the bells and whistles. Have just 11000 miles on it trouble free as well. It took me about 9 months of research to decide to buy this truck. At the time all you heard was the horrible stories about the new 6.0L, and plus this would have been my first diesel. So far I am very glad I made this purchase and cant wait to purchase something larger to tow, I currently tow a tandem jet ski trailer...........

05 F-250 Diesel King Ranch, man I love that truck. It replaced an 00 Excursion with the 7.3L Diesel. This 05 is a head & shoulders better vehicle and I love the power and torque of the diesel. My son is into Mustang muscle cars and he calls the F-two fiddy a diesel sports car. I think you will be very happy with the new diesel.
