I have a '91 explorer 4x4 auto with the auto transfer case. the tranny is having problems and i don't like autos that much anyways. I have a lot o money into it and don't want to sell it but i'd like a manual. I know the basic mechanical part of the swap but i'm confused on the computer part. What needs to be replaced, where is it cuz i see computer lookin things everywhere? Has anybody done this before?
Thanks
I'm not sure about the computer part. If you don't get the info you need here you might try the transmission forum. I always like a manual better than auto. Good luck with it.
The computer or ECU is behind the kick panel on passenger side just in front of the door. Remove the plastic panel to expose the ECU.
Not sure what the diff is between the programming codes for manual vs. auto other than torque converter lockup and 3-4 upshift. There are some wiring issues such as clutch position sensor for starting and rewire neutral safety and backup light connectors to deal with. Other than that, the remainder iof issues deal with the mechanical thiings involved in the retrofit.

The x-member should be made for either tranny option from the factory and the wiring harness should have an unused plug or two hanging underneath for the manual tranny, maybe for the reverse lights and/or the neutral safety switch. Thats' my experience from looking at other harnesses.
To be honest, while I am not a big shushbox guy, they are usually geared better for off-roading, unlike the Mazda stick shift, which is a truckified T5....
