The O/D light is tied into the transmission diagnostic system. When the light flashes, it's essentially functioning as a "check transmission" light. But, chafed O/D wires inside the shift lever could trigger the light as well. OBD-II readers can't diagnose transmission trouble codes. Might be worth a trip to the dealer just to benefit from their diagnostic equipment.

I called Top Dog transmissions in Wichita, Ks for this same exact thing and they told me that it is usually the shift cylinoid for the tranny. Depending on the year of your truck, there are two diff styles . The change was made in 97/98. Unless there has been any new changes to that part since then.
