Your missing the point though, the leathers main purpose isn't to make you look good, its protection. Harley is trying to get their share of the market, thats all.
Nobody will change their view on something because of crude remarks.
I thought this site was here for people to help one another and work together. I don't think that means we all have to think alike, but we can agree to disagree, and still respect one another. The people you call names today (some of them belong to this site), might be the people with the answers to your next problem.
There are alot of things I think are foolish, that people do and spend their money on. And I'm sure they think alot of what I do is foolish. So what. This is not a perfect world. It's not the world according to you. Besides, people spending money on whatever they are interested in is good for the economy. Sooner or later, the money spent on things you think are foolish will change hands a few times, and then get spent on something that supports whatever business you are involved in.
Everybodies views and opinions are important, even if they are opposite. But why get ignorant and crude with one another?
I say again, if you want to ride a motorcycle, a person will discover that there is much more to riding than initially meets the eye. Riding is more than commuting cheaply to work, riding takes special safety equipment, riding requires certain skills to stay upright, and riding a bike will draw you into an entirely new sub-culture. When a rider becomes aware of this sub-culture, it tends to influence how they dress, act, and ride. No matter how you slice it, each rider makes their very own statement as they go down the road, whether in a pack or by themselves. The image a rider projects is up to them, and sometimes a biker can embarass themselves and other bikers, but usually we all manage to pull off a good clean ride on a bike we're proud to ride.
At this point, I should quit while I may be ahead, I think smoking too much is making it harder and harder for me to explain myself. Brain cells are jumping ship,
I'm not sure if I agree with that. I believe the only sub-culture motorcyclists are drawn in would involve the common stereotypes about them. Other than that, there are many riders who ride to ride, not to project any kind of image.
I personally don't care what everyone else thinks of me on my bike, and I certainly am not trying to project an image. I'm just trying to have fun, be safe, and that's about it.
That being said, I agree that leathers are protective, but in my opinion, many of those who wear a lot of it wear it because they think it looks good, not becuase it is protective. This is the reason that those same folks spend thousands of dollars for chrome for their motorcycle, not becuase it improves the motorcycle in any measurable respect, but because it looks good! I'm not saying there's anything wrong with looking good on a bike, but I don't like much of the biker mentality.
BTW, I ride a Suzuki Intruder 800, and I love it!!! What do you guys ride?
I think the Honda CX500 with stock exhaust was the quietest bike ever made, even the turbo model. The more years I ride, the quieter I want it for some reason. 25 years ago I started with a HD w/straight pipes, now I fab JC Whitneys with 1/2" EMT for the Hondas.
I've wrecked both with and without leathers. I'd have to say it's much more pleasant to skid with them on. Sometimes I wear them, sometimes I wear shorts, depends. My black jeans with brown shoes and white socks has to be my favorite fashion statement while on the bike.
Loud pipes, flashing lights, colorful clothes..none of that works when cagers are sleeping. It's ultimately your responsibility as a rider to avoid being run down. To most of the population, you are invisible. That being said,I was visiting my son in San Jose last summer. Every time I set out on the freeway, inevitibly(sp)I would hear the Harley(yes, they all were)before it came up behind me. Then again,I was paying some attention to my driving. And,I new what the sound was.
I ride a Harley FLHT Standard. I've rode Harleys all my life. It is a lifestyle that most people just don't understand. It is not about looking cool, or tough. It is just about the freedom!!!!
As for how a person looks going down the road, who cares? Stop judging people on their looks. Most bikers are quality people who just love the freedom of riding. No matter what they ride.
I don't mean to sound disrespectful. But hey man, lighten up
I guess I should ask what sort of mileage bikes generally get? I had the impression they got close to 100mpg. If 60mpg is really the case then yeah I might be better served by a car.
I'd like to second the previous mention MSF course. It is great for seasoned or begining riders. I took it and loved some of the stuff it teaches you. (Some things you forgot if you have been riding for a while). A better way to be safe out there.
I did it after 30 years of riding and it was worth the expense and the time (a whole weekend). It has made me a much better rider.
My 2 BMWs are as quiet as a car and I want it that way. You can go to a BMW Rally with 6,000 people and never have to raise your voice. NICE!
Hey Crazy001, All I Did Was Answer A Question. Someone Wanted To Know What Kind Of Bike We Ride. Go Back And Read It Again. Nowhere Did I Say There Was More Freedom On A Harley. I Said No Matter What You Ride.
