I am the second owner of this '67, acquired in 1988. I've been told by several mechanics and the guys down at the local Ford dealers that this truck configuration is not a production item. It's an F250 3/4 ton, short bed, 2 wheel drive, definitely built that way in San Jose. I have the special order number and parts list. Model # on the VIN plate says F253, but I don't know what that means. The special order sheet also has a box that says total units-0001. Anyway, I have a few questions for all you experts out there.
#1. Anybody ever seen one of these before?
#2. If this is a one-of-a-kind, what does that do for the value, if anything?
#3. How does one go about getting a copy of the original build sheet from Ford?
#4. How do I decode the VIN?
1. No
2. Don't know
3. Don't Know
4. The easiest way is to pick up a shop manual for a '67. But according to my '72 decoder, you have an F250, which is a 3/4 ton, and the third digit (3) stands for it being a flare-side pick up.
There are several bookstores for vintage cars and trucks, where you can obtain a shop manual.
You could have a type-o or the 3 could be a B. The F25 means F250, the third digit is for the engine. Doubt you could get one penny more for the mistake, enjoy your truck.
You can go to FORD's website to request a "build-sheet" for your truck which will give you all the "out of the factory" infor about the truck. Takes about a week or 2 and they mail it to you for free, I think.

elemint is correct, the three refers to gvw...
F25 = 3/4 ton 2wd
3 = 8100 gvw
then comes engine code, probably a "Y" meaning a 352
then "R" if your truck is from San Hose
then the last run of numbers is the consecutive unit number starting with a letter... since your truck is a 67 it probably starts with a "A" "B" or maybe "C"
hope this helps
not to my knowledge there ever was a F253 truck built as a short bed unless it was a crewcab.
your paper that says that it was a special order and only one unit means just that one was ordered in that particular way on that "order". if a big company ordered a fleet of 10 exactly alike it would read 0010... its probably a special order, but that doesnt make it special.
