After six weeks of playing with this thing. I finally got the transmisson put back in today. Fired it up and went for a spin. Wow, it actually works! All 4 gears, and reverse too! I feel like some kind of genious now. I bought this thing for $600 about 3 months ago. Spent like another 6 or 7 on the rebuild. So now I can start fixing all the little annoying problems. I'm still not 100% confident in it, but Progress has been made! Who knows, one day I might start getting all lovey-dovey and sentimental over this thing like the rest of you guys...

All in all I spent close to $700 on it, but I think that's pretty good considering that Advavnce Auto wanted $1300 for theirs, and you still have to install it yourself. The hardest part is getting it in and out of the vehicle. The actual rebuilding is the "fun" part.
Do you mean the valve body? Yes, you have to take it off. But its not difficult. There's about 17 little bolts you have to take off, and they're different lengths, so you want to put them back where they came from. And be careful not to turn the valve body upside down because all kinds of little parts will start falling out! That solenoid has a mesh screen behind it that gets clogged up with stuff, so just cleaning it may fix your problem. The new version doesn't have the screen, so I think it might be better. And of course, if you take the vb off, you'll have to replace the seperator plate gaskets. Good luck.
hey thanks htbird. my 3-4 solenoid is burnt up at the electrical connections so is no good anyway, I was thinking maybe I could undo the bolts on the valve cover just enough so that I could pull out that peice of metal that holds the solenoid in place or do you think that the gasket would be no good once I have broken the seal, I am doing all this while the tranny is still in the van so it is not easy. Also I have counted about 22 bolts on that valve body or are there some that don't need to come out?
I think there are 17 of one size, 5 long ones, one of which holds the filter on as well, and 3 or 4 others that are sort of inbetween. I can't posts links or pictures on here, so if you want to, you could email me and I'll point you in the right direction, where you can see a diagram. But anyway, you will have to get new gaskets, but there only about $2 at a tranny parts place, if you can find one. Take it out, and set it on your bench. You have to watch out for this little link that goes to the shift linkage. Then take the top gaslet off. There's 3 allen screws that hold the seperator plate. Take those off, and carefully lift it off. What you want is called bore 202. The first one from the left on that side is bore 200, which has the TC converter clutch solenoid, then 201, 202, etc. All 3 of these share the same retainer setup. You push in on the valve in 201, and everything will come out. then you can pull out the 3-4 solenoid and the barrel shaped screen behind it. Take those to your parts place and get all your stuff, and you should be good to go, if thats all thats wrong with it.
