Smile 460 getting hot

Hey guys, well i got my 460 started today and got the timing set to about 10deg btdc. I let it runs a few mniutes at about a 1000 rps to break the cam in and i noticed that my motor was running really really hot. The temp gauge was pegged all the way to hot, but this doenst make sense to me either. When the truck is turned off, o by the way its a 75 250 the oil pressure still reads when the motor is off and the key is turned, which puzzles me. So anyway im woundering what to do about this getting hot. The thermostat is new not sure what temp it is, radiator hoses are new, and radiator is clean, and waterpump is new, so im stumped, Any ideas guys??????? Thanks Matt

make sure the water passages in the clock is clean. I just puled my 460 apart for a rebuild. It had also been running hot after replacing the water pump, t-stat, and having the radiator cleaned and checked. I found that the water passages in the block was lined with alot of sludge. Almost 1" thick at the water pump.

If everything is good and clean, make sure the radiator is the appropiate size for the engine. Too small of a radiator will not allow the heat to dispearse as good.

Be sure your gauges and senders are good also. It wouldn't be good to spend all that money fixing this and that when the gauge or the temp sender is just bad...

Can you turn on the lights or hit the brakes and the gauges move? Sometimes a bad ground can affect their reading. You have factory gauges or aftermarket? Have the correct sender in there? Maybe its bad?

Your radiator may need to be flushed. Is this a rebuilt engine or sitting awhile ?

Did it spew any fluid out the radiator when it got real hot? You may have an air pocket behind the thermostat and if it got too hot could have locked up the thermostat. I usually like to drill a 1/16 or 1/8" hole or three in the thermostat near the edge to relieve the air.

Not sure when, but Ford is/was known to use voltage regulators in the gauge/instrument circuits. I have watched my guages (fuel level, and temp.)on a van move from normal temp and 1/4 tank all the way to hot and full tank while driving. Of course I pulled over, and it was not hot after all. I was informed by a ford mechanic friend that the instrument voltage regulator may be the problem. You may want to try to gain acess to a temp gun or hook up a temporary mechanical gauge to veryfy that the engine is in fact getting hot. You may already know that it is actually overheating.
